Naturally ventilated, energy recovery ventilators attaching to a new geoexchange system. LEED Platinum. Net zero energy campus design.

The Chatham University Eden Hall Campus, located in Richland Township, Pennsylvania, is the first university campus in the world to be built as a sustainable campus from the ground up. Home to Chatham’s Falk School of Sustainability, the campus is dedicated to teaching sustainability, revealing natural systems and developing the next generation of environmental stewards. The project honors the legacy of Chatham alum Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring and widely considered the founder of the environmental movement. Mithun designed buildings and infrastructure for the first phase of development to generate more water and energy than it uses, produce food, recycle nutrients, and support habitat and healthy soils. Located in a peri-urban setting near greater Pittsburgh in an area with the greatest water quality challenges of the state, the campus provides an important opportunity to demonstrate sustainable land use practices.

The Center (school district commissary)
Oakland Unified, Oakland, CA
50,000 sqft (+site work/bldgs)
Role: MEP PM & Mechanical/ Plumbing/ Refrigeration Engineer of Record. Refrigeration EOR scope includes kitchen process and cold storage refrigeration and cold storage freezers - with Introba.

Designed all natural refrigerant system for Cold Storage and commercial central kitchen needs.

The new central commissary for Oakland Unified School District, called The Center, has been designed to produce 40,000 meals per day.

It includes several cook lines with cook chill tanks, multiple 150-gallon steam jacket kettles, and blast chillers on a glycol system. A dedicated fan coil unit will be placed for the dry compressed air room and equipment that serve the packaging lines.
The building utilizes 100% natural refrigerants (COâ‚‚ and NH3) for food storage and processing, drastically reducing the ozone depletion and global warming potential associated with the facility.

The roof-mounted refrigeration racks provide cooling for all food storage and chilling needs. Simultaneously, heat is recovered from the refrigeration rack condensers to supply the project’s domestic and kitchen hot water needs.

The office administration and test kitchen areas will be passively cooled at night and naturally ventilated during the day, eliminating the need for mechanical cooling. The exposed thermal mass has also been incorporated to enhance the night flush strategy and improve occupant comfort.
